Laurie’s background in clinical leadership, interior design and design research enables her to integrate science and knowledge driven design solutions for multiple service lines. Laurie leads the efforts in the implementation of research informed planning and design through all architectural phases as well as manages the original research efforts at WHR Architects, Inc.Laurie serves as a member of the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Health Guidelines Revision Committee and is a former member of the CHD Research Coalition.  She is a founding member of the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID) in addition to the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD). Her publications, interviews and chapters are featured in books, trade journals in addition to peer reviewed journals.

Jennie Evans, RN, BS, EDAC, LEED AP
Health Design Strategist

Past-President of the Nursing Institute of Healthcare Design and award winner of the HCD 10 in 2014, Jennie is passionate about using evidence-based design principles to improve the environment of care. Jennie uses a human-centered design approach to promote operationally efficient environments, cohesiveness of services and actively involve the family in decision-making to improve their health and well-being.

Her passion for social consciousness including health and well-being has led her to the world of population health where opportunities exist to integrate the approaches of the health system and the community to improve health disparities.

A Canadian and American citizen, Jennie enjoys being outdoors, swimming, and traveling.


Ana Pinto-Alexander, RID, IDA, EDAC
Principal & Sr. Vice President

HKS, Inc.Ana Pinto-Alexander has more than 30 years of experience designing interiors for the country’s most progressive facilities. Her childhood in Colombia, South America, combined with extensive international travel has influenced her unique design perspective. Ana’s extensive research has anchored her belief that the environments we live, work and play in greatly reflects and affects who we are as individuals. Although known most prevalently for her work in healthcare interiors, she also extends her passion for meaningful interior design to: corporate and educational facilities.Ana has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design from Purdue University. Ana has guest lectured at the University and continues to mentor students interested in the design profession. She is a member of the International Design Association and holds a certificate from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.

Ana has juried Healthcare Design magazine’s Architectural Showcase and Contract magazine’s Healthcare Environment Awards. She has spoken nationally and internationally on the importance the built environment has in the way we live our lives. The recipient of numerous awards, including the 2013 “Legends IN Design”, she has also been featured in several national publications, including a cover story for Interiors and Sources.Ana has served as board member of the Indianapolis Equal Employment Opportunity and the Indianapolis Business Development Counsel. Ana is an active Board Member for the Indiana Repertory Theatre and she continues to serve as an advisory board member of the Riley Children’s Foundation Advisory Board. Riley Hospital holds a special place in Ana’s heart after spending many weeks at the hospital during the treatment of her young daughter. She continues empathize with those caring for a sick loved one both in her service on the board and in the designs she creates.

Community service remains an integral component in Ana’s mission to improve the world we live in.  Ana continually encourages and engages with designers volunteering time on not-for-profit projects serving the community including:  Samantha’s House, The Damien Center and Designs for Dignity.


Ellen Pitcher RN, MBA, MSN, NEA-BC, FACHE

El Paso Children’s HospitalMs. Ellen M. Pitcher recently served at El Paso Children’s Hospital as the Interim Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer. She is a senior healthcare executive with more than 30 years of progressive nursing leadership experience in various acute care settings and has held successful leadership roles in small and large public, not-for-profit, and for-profit facilities over the course of her career.Prior to joining EPCH, Ms. Pitcher served as the Chief Nursing Officer at Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, a not-for-profit hospital which is part of Baylor Scott & White Health. Ms. Pitcher has also served as the Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer at what is now Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Plano. Under her leadership the center earned many nursing honors, including the 2008 Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety and the 2006 and 2007 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence for treatment of acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure. The hospital was also designated a Texas Nurse Friendly hospital from 2007 until 2010. The American Society of Bariatric Surgeons has named Baylor Plano a Bariatric Center of Excellence.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Master of Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University and her Master of Science in nursing from University of Texas at Arlington. Pitcher has her Advanced Certification in Nursing Administration and has achieved Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

She’s a member of the American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Executives, Texas Organization of Nurse Executives, North Texas Organization of Nurse Executives and the American College of Health Care Executives. In 1993, Texas Nurses Association named Pitcher one of the Great 100 Nurses.

Katie Bird has partnered with clients and designers to bolster employee engagement and well-being since 1990. In her current role as a Steelcase Workplace Consultant, she works directly with local design firms to share workplace futures research and trends and to facilitate discovery workshops.
